What Makes A Good Wine?
The three words acidity, sweetness, and tannins represent a few of the major components of a quality wine, with the fourth being alcohol. Alcohol is an important player in wine quality, besides being one of the reasons we often crave a glass in the first place.
Balance is the correlation between each of these components. A wine is balanced when nothing sticks out as you sip, such as oversaturated sweetness or aggressive tannin. Most wines are balanced to the untrained taste bud, excluding those with specific pet peeves about food. For example - if you find sweet flavors unsavory, or you have an affinity for tart foods — you may perceive certain wines to be unbalanced. Professional tasters know their own idiosyncrasies and adjust for them when they judge wine.
